Marshall, George Catlett
(1880-1959) Маршалл, Джордж Кэтлет
Военный и государственный деятель. Окончил Вирджинский военный институт [Virginia Military Institute] и Командно-штабную школу Сухопутных войск [Army Command and General Staff School] (1908). Во время первой мировой войны занимал видные штабные должности в экспедиционных силах США в Европе. В 1919-24 был помощником генерала Першинга [Pershing, John Joseph]. Преподавал в пехотном училище. В 1939-45 - начальник штаба Сухопутных войск, главный советник президента Рузвельта [Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)] по стратегическим вопросам. С декабря 1944 генерал армии. В 1947 назначен госсекретарем [Secretary of State]; в речи в Гарвардском университете [Harvard University] предложил программу экономического восстановления Европы [European Recovery Program], позднее названную планом Маршалла [Marshall Plan]. В 1950 в течение года был министром обороны [Secretary of Defense], принимал активное участие в создании НАТО. В 1953 ему как автору плана Маршалла присуждена Нобелевская премия мира. В 1997 открыт памятник Маршаллу в г. Роттердаме (Нидерланды).
